In ancient Hawaii, on the island of what’s now Kauai, red volcanic clay known as Alaea “met” Sea Salt when, all over heavy rains, the red clay sediment seeped into the ocean from Kauai’s rivers. When this red ocean water became trapped in tidal pools, evaporation created Hawaiian Red Alaea Sea Salt. This salt is wealthy in minerals from the sea and volcanic red clay from the earth. The volcanic red clay is high in iron oxide. Hawaiian Red Sea Salt is said to have curative properties when used for sore throats, wounds, body aches, muscle sprains, gum infections and cold sores. It’s believed to attract toxins from overworked muscle tissue. It is a beautiful, naturally colored salt. Traditionally, in precedent days, the kahuna lapa’au (healer) and Kahu (high priest) would use ‘Alaea Sea Salt for religious rituals to cleanse and bless homes, land, canoes or anything else that required cleansing and blessing! ‘Alaea Red is thought of as sacred, reprensenting both the earth and the sea, since the salt has components of both.
